Greenwood Quire AGM 2025 – Chairman’s Report
2024 was eventful for the Quire, The most significant happening was the decision by our
Conductor, Brian to retire from conducting. Happily, Vaughan stepped forward to lead us for an interim period for which we are very grateful. Vaughan has said that he does not have a final date in mind for his conducting, but that it is definitely interim. Our rehearsals with Vaughan have been very enjoyable. We are very fortunate to have such a capable interim conductor. It is clear that such capability in our next conductor is essential to enable the Quire (singers and band) to give of our best and enjoy our music.
Events during the year: Following the Aslackby Plough Service our January rehearsal was led by Ken Baddley who introduced some pieces new to us but present in the Weston manuscript of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society. We have included them in practices during the year and they will appear in our concert programme in May. We had hoped to have more sessions by Ken in 2025, but his discovery of bowel cancer has prevented this. Thankfully he is now home again following an operation and we wish him a
speedy recovery.
We gave performances at Fishtoft Church and at Bourne Methodist Church. Our Carol Café inDecember was a great success and we must be doing something right as several new members have joined having experienced one of our performances.
I need to thank a number of people: Brian for leading us so well through the year, he is muchmissed, Dave for looking after our finances, John for managing website and email, Michael for transcribing and posting our music of many parts and the web editorial group. I’d like to thank Julia, for two things in particular: One, for maintaining a Greenwood presence in the WGMA Newsletter and broadcasting our doings within the West Gallery Music world. The other for sorting and listing the books, music and arrangements in the archive given to us by our founder, Pete Shaw. We now need somewhere to keep them safe that is handy for anyone to consult.
Speaking of Pete, who died in August and whose funeral a number of us attended, his passing and his contribution to Greenwood Quire were reported in the Autumn and Winter WGMA Newsletters.
A most important thank you to Denise for her lovingly researched, lively scripts and
accompanying programmes. And, of course, to her and Chris for the facilities of the church and the welcome we receive as part of the community of this National Churches Trust Church of the Year 2024.
My last thank you is to all of you, singers, instrumentalists, committee volunteers and all who contribute in any way to making this a truly happy enterprise, powered by kindness.
Mike Stevens, Chairman
